Note: Assignment #  5 Portrait Lighting Ratio

Assignment # 5 Portrait Lighting Ratio (new due date)

The role of the portrait photographer is to provide neutral territory –an area where the photographer can exercise technical control over the light and the setting and still show aspects of the subject’s personality.

In this assignment you will make photographs of a person in the studio to show that you have an understanding of how to properly light and capture personality and/or emotion in a controlled setting.

You will make two separate b&w portraits - one on a high key set and one on a low key set using any of the following types of light: Front/Glamour Light, Rembrandt lighting, or Side lighting. Make sure that you match the lighting ratios with the type of set that you are working on.  Example: 1:2 or 1:3 lighting ratio for high key; 1:4 to 1:6 for low key. With all images, make sure that the lighting ratio matches the emotion or personality that you are trying to illustrate.

• All images must be made with DSLR using the Dynalite in the studio
• Shoot two separate themes or sets (one high key/one low key) each having a minimum of 5 different compositions, expressions, etc. for each theme (5 for High Key/ 5 for Low Key)
• Show an intentional relationship between the type of light/lighting ratio and the person/s being photographed
• In the studio only, use different lighting situations, background, etc, on the two different sets

You can use seamless or be creative and build a set but don’t let the set take over. Remember the person should be the focal point of the photograph.  All photographs must be done in the studio. Remember only one main light source!
