Midterm Assignment "“Using what you may have learned”

By this point students should have control of the basics of studio tabletop skills; i.e. metal, glass, shape, texture, etc. Pay careful attention as to how the light source illuminates the subjects along with lighting ratios and color combinations.  In this assignment the student will pick two of the following assignments:

Still Life
Make a simple still life of any subject that can fit on a table. One way to begin would be to find a background and illustrate how it relates directly to the subject(s) or you might start with a quality of light and choose your subject(s) based on how they interact with the light. You could simply photograph the way light modifies an object. Or perhaps you’ll begin with choosing a main subject(s) that you’d like to photograph, for its texture, graphic patterns or shape value. Think about vantage point. What about light—its quality and direction? Also think about color! How does the background color relate to the subject or the props around the subject?  This is what your idea books are for.

Box & Bottle
Make a still life image using a box and bottle.  The box and bottle must have a relationship to each other, example: perfume or cologne that comes in a box.  Always open the box from the bottom to get the bottle out and make sure that the box and the bottle are cosmetically prefect. Use all the knowledge that you have gained in the first three assignments.  Choose your lighting, background and props carefully.  Your work will be evaluated on the merit of composition and color.

Beverages
Make a still life that includes a drinkable beverage.  When photographing beverages (i.e. soda, coffee, etc.) make sure that you do your homework on how that type of liquid should be depicted and look drinkable. For example when photographing soda you must have light coming though from the back and have it look cold and enticing.  Use all the knowledge that you have gained in the first three assignments.  Choose your lighting, background and props carefully.  Your work will be evaluated on the merit of composition and color.

Rules:

Both must be made in a studio setting.  It is up to you to come up with both the subject and the backgrounds, NO SEAMLESS!  Each student will turn in one print and jpeg from two of the above assignments, along with Lighting Diagram and Info page in you idea book.

For Critique you will need a minimum of two prints on paper 11 X 17 inches (images no smaller than 12 on it’s longest edge) representing two of the three assignments. Make sure that you have lighting diagram and shooting info in your Idea books.  Neatness will count big points on your idea books. Also you will need to bring jpeg files of your images.

Note: Assignments turned in late will be marked down 10 points. Diagrams, shooting info counts 1/3 of your final grade.

Deadline: March 10, 2016
